Dimitri is born with twelve fingers. And he is clumsy. That’s the gist of the book. He stumbles through the 20th Century, all the while trying to do his best to assassinate some of the leaders of the time. Dimitri can speak any language and learn any trade, a chameleon. His goal is to assassinate a world leader, but his extra digits always seem to conspire against him.
As he ages, we get to meet Mata Hari, Al Capone, Franklin Roosevelt and others, as he either befriends them or lines them Dimitri is born with twelve fingers. As he ages, we get to meet Mata Hari, Al Capone, Franklin Roosevelt and others, as he either befriends them or lines them up for murder.
While reading this, I thought of Zeligthe Woody Allen movie where an average joe gets inserted into famous moments of recent history.
A narrator says, “When you look back on it, it was very strange. The writing is fine and I actually liked the idea, as each new leader or celebrity had me scurrying to Wiki their biographies.
The Al Capone section and the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre kept me interested, but the little dwarf who is the last of the Thuggee and who chases Dimitri all over the world, well he left me a bit bored. Overall, exganadas a bad book but I had a difficult time staying fully interested once the famous folks left the pages.
Dec 04, Moureco rated it it was ok Shelves: Sou completamente alucinada, apaixonada pelos textos deste comediante, entrevistador e autor. Fiquei parecendo uma louca, lendo e esganadsa ao mesmo tempo. Ainda bem que procurei ler dentro de casa. Sou apaixonada pelo destrambelhado do Dimitri. All the “humor” is over-the-top slapstick physical comedy, with little authorial effort put into actual wit. This book is supposed to be historical, but it reads like the author Googled a few famous names from the time period and randomly inserted them into various chapters for little to no reason.
The main character is somehow inexplicably a genius who speaks every language and is a crack shot with every gunan This book is supposed to be funny, but it just reads like a Looney Tunes cartoon. The main character is somehow inexplicably esgganadas genius who speaks every language and is a crack shot with every gunand ALSO a totally buffoonish, klutzy idiot caricature, making him feel like two totally separate people with the same name.
He me no personality or even any reason for his fanaticism. He is just super talented at everything he ever tries, except for the thing he sm trying to do. He has lots of opportunities to take that as a sign, choose a new profession better suited to his talents, and learn and develop as a character – but doesn’t.
He’s frustrating and boring to read, the Gary Stu of assassins, which is a phrase I never thought I’d have cause to say. Nothing of importance ever happens in the emm, because he fails at everything he does.
Except for have sex with women, which he does constantly, and we’re told he’s supernaturally good liro it But the author tells us his character is a sex wizard, and goes into totally excessive detail about his various partners’ nipples, so obviously it must be true.
I’m not sure how extra fingers would make you any better at pleasing a woman, but what do I know about anatomy?
I wasn’t impressed, and if this is the author’s idea of “a rip-roaring romp through history”, I’ll stick with the nonfiction, thanks.
And did I mention he has six fingers on each hand? The comedy begins when he is one a dozen assassins trying to take out Archduke Ferdinand in But there are plenty more chances for him to spoil the fun. He is implicated in responsibility for the arrest and eventual execution of the notorious beautiful spy, Mata Hari. He next lands in Chicago where he ax up with Al Capone, and was esganadqs, but not quite, involved in the St.

True to his blundering ways, Dmitri ends up causing his first killing in trying to prevent esganadad ousted dictator, Getulio Vargas, from committing suicide. The book includes many real historical photos of the assassins and the assassinated. I have a weakness for picaresque novels, and so picked up this one aas a Serbo-Brazillian anarchist assassin with great anticipation.
It tells the story of Dmitiri, a fingered boy with a gift for languages and a childhood in a Balkan circus at the start of the 20th century. As quasi-historical fiction, it’s fun stuff especially delicious is a homicidal dwarf who pursues Dmitiri throughout the bookand Soares does a wonderful job weaving his earnest protagonist into history. However, the pratfalls do get a little repetitive over time — even for a fan of the picaresque, and the book kind of runs out of steam just when it should be climaxing. Nonetheless, it has whet my appetite to track down the author’s first book in translation, A Samba for Sherlock.
Dimo, of a Brazilian mother and Bosnian father, and a half castrati, leaves home as a teenager to fulfill his destiny, marked by the twelve fingers he was born with, to become as assassin: He goes down a path where at every turn he makes, murder and mayhem is left behind; but not by his hands, to his utmost disappointment.

Beautifully written, this book is a history lesson with real events and real people, rewritten to tell the story of a confused romantic anarchist, with death on his mind, but which can never esganadass its way zs his clumsy twelve-fingered hands. An intensely fun read. Thank you Ronny for recommending this! A tragicomedy for history nerds. This tale of the world’s most charming and hapless assassin, Forrest Gump as a twelve-fingered Serbian-Brazilian anarchist out esganadad rid the world rsganadas tyrants, is a rake gag of a book, and I suspect a lot of folks will find it repetitive.
Personally I got a lot of laughs out of the journey of seeing how things would go sideways on Dimo this time. As it goes on there’s also hints of a Panglossian figure sadly stuck on a dream that’s rsganadas going to come true and giving A tragicomedy for history nerds.
As it goes on there’s also hints of a Panglossian figure sadly stuck on a dream that’s never going to come true and giving up everything good in life for it, as well as eaganadas subtle commentary on the power of the unremembered and nameless to impact history. For some reason, I didn’t find ssganadas quite as appealing as “Samba,” perhaps because so much of the novel takes place outside Brazil.
Still a fun read. O outro, igualmente ruim, apenas um pouquinho menos pior por aprendermos um pouco sobre o Rio de Janeiro colonial. Hihihihihi thanks to Ronny for lending me this book Baru sampe halaman 24 siiii Quite light, funny n’ also meaningful book It’s fun to read it What a clumsy Anarchist Dimo is! He is not a genius author, but he shows that with effort we can do a good work even without talent. I like it so much right now! It took me a while to read Usually I’d swallow a book this size whole in only a few days.
