Solitary animals do not exhibit any behavior that approximates morality. A good friend of mine, a scary-smart natjred type who worked at good Yerkes Primate Research Center, sent me this book because she knew — before I did — that I don’t actually believe in evolutionary theory when it comes to explaining human behavior. In some of his most daring and successful experiments, de Waal showed that a species of monkey that is typically very hierarchical and aggressive can actually learn to be more tolerant and relaxed if members of the aggressive species are raised with slightly older members of the tolerant species.
